Michael Chabon: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
Phenomenal book about two comic book - writing cousins in New York in the 30's and 40's. I hesitated to read it as I couldn't picture caring too much about comic books and their creation, but the book is so much more than that. Definitely a must read!Kiran Desai: The Inheritance of Loss
A complicated novel about a small town in northern India, an orphaned teenage girl sent to live with her grandfather, a cook who sends his son to America, and their intertwined histories, relationships and disappointments - and there are a lot of disappointments. Beyond the characters, the book is really about the relationship between India and the West: at the top of the list of disappointments for most of the characters is the fact that they aren't British, or at least American, or at least white.
